Carrying 4 bikes on roof advice
2 2

9 posts in this topic

Hello,

I know nothing about cars (just thought I'd say that in case I look stoopid). Our kadjar came with roof bars and we need to buy something to allow us to carry 4 bikes on car roof - for general UK camping trips but also to France in summer so needs to be good quality. We have a new camping trailer so can't use our bike tow bar carrier. The trailer will have the roofbox on top so need to put the bikes on the car roof.

Can anyone recommend a website to purchase the bike rails from - I'm not even sure what they are called or a good make I should look at ? Hoping to get asap as off camping this weekend.

Thanks, any advice welcome

No advice at all about the rack, we recently fitted a Halford sourced Exodus 4 bike tow ball mounted rack on 1 of our cars, excellent, but not for you.

My advice is by way of an incident I witnessed many years back. Car in front on wide and fast A road, 3 bikes on a boot mounted rack. They were about 5 miles from a very popular beauty/cycling spot. I followed them for about 2 miles before I could get past safely. In that time I ran over 2 pedals from the bikes, god knows how many they had left when they got "there"

That must have been 1 hell of a  disappointing day out, check the rack and it's mounting and do check the bikes, especially if brand spanking.

All jokes aside I have carried bikes on the roof 3 there would be a lot of drag on 4 bikes. We had a crv and the roof rails were bolted into place the kadjar fixing points look a little light weight compared to the crv. The best make would be Thule they have the most comprehensive list ...

Thanks for replies. Think I'll need to go to a specialist. We often carry bikes on the back of the car and have a decent renault 4 bike carrier. Looks like putting 4 on the roof is tricky and will scupper our holiday plans.

You have to mind the max load weight of the roof of the car, so four heavy bikes are probably over the limit. Four very light bikes might fit in under the allowed 75 kg including the rack and holders?

Otherwise, one or two foldable bikes might fit into the camping trailer, so there will be only two or three bikes on the roof rack?

Good idea. We have 2 kids bikes and 2 adult bikes so perhaps we could take the tyres off and put in the trailer. This weekends camping trip is a test for our bigger trip this summer.

and I didn't know about the max load weight. My husband just leaves me to sort out everything. He just likes driving around in the Kadjar listening to the radio!
